I’m Kody J., a general adult psychiatrist working in a hospital-based setting in Canada. My work spans inpatient, outpatient, ER, and consultation-liaison psychiatry, and what I share here is shaped by years of clinical experience—but this isn’t therapy, and it isn’t advice. It’s something else. A place to notice what we’ve all been quietly carrying.
Soul on Call is a reflective project for physicians (and fellow travelers) who’ve become a little too good at coping. It’s for those who keep showing up, keep getting things done, and still quietly wonder:
- Where did my joy go?
- What happened to my sense of self?
- Why does “fine” feel... not quite fine anymore?
At the center of these essays is Dr. Solan Call—a fictional composite of the quietly competent, slightly frayed clinicians we all know. He’s not in crisis. He’s just… not quite there.
Through his story, I explore themes like burnout, identity loss, perfectionism, and the strange emotional math of modern medicine—not from a place of mastery, but of curiosity.
I’m not here to preach or fix. Just to notice out loud.
To make space for the questions that live beneath the rounds, the checklists, the inbox.
To offer, maybe, a small shift in how we see ourselves—or remember ourselves—along the way.
If you’re not a physician but something here resonates, you’re welcome too.
Burnout doesn’t care what your job title is.
Read. Reflect.
Take what serves you. Leave what doesn’t.
And if you feel a little lost sometimes, you’re not the only one.
That’s part of why this exists.
